The Rongai Route is a less-traveled Kilimanjaro trail that offers several unique advantages. Starting on the northern slope of the mountain in a serene coniferous forest, it winds through a variety of climatic zones before descending along the Marangu Route on the southwestern side of Kilimanjaro.
One of the biggest draws of Rongai is its seclusion—you’ll encounter far fewer trekkers than on the busier southern routes, enjoying a more peaceful and intimate climbing experience. The route is also incredibly scenic, with stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo, the surrounding Tanzanian landscapes, and distinctive flora, including Kilimanjaro Giant Groundsels. While the northern slopes are drier and less dense, there is still plenty to admire along the ascent.

Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a PK Adventure representative will greet you and take you to your hotel. Your accommodation is prepared for a relaxing stay, offering comfortable rooms, hot showers, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and reliable internet access. In the evening, you’ll meet with our team for a detailed briefing to ensure you’re fully prepared for the adventure ahead.
Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for your group. Additional fees apply for extra individual transfers, so coordinating your group’s arrival and departure times is the best way to avoid extra costs.
Your adventure begins in the morning when a guide and the mountain support crew from PK Adventure meet you at your hotel for a brief but informative briefing. From there, you’ll enjoy a scenic drive to Kilimanjaro National Park’s northern entrance, Nalemuru Gate (2,020 m / 6,627 ft).
After completing the necessary formalities, including climbing permits and registration with the search-and-rescue service, your trek begins toward Simba Camp (2,671 m / 8,761 ft). Today’s hike is moderate, taking you through lush coniferous forests along Kilimanjaro’s northern slope. Remember to maintain a comfortable pace and enjoy the surroundings rather than rushing.
By the time you arrive at Simba Camp, our professional mountain crew will have prepared everything you need—tents set up, and dinner underway—so you can relax and enjoy your first night on the mountain.
Early in the morning, after breakfast, the group will leave Simba Camp and begin the trek toward your second high-altitude stop: Second Cave Camp (3,450 m). This section of the route is relatively easy and takes about three hours, giving you plenty of time to rest and explore the area once you arrive. After lunch, you’ll have a couple of hours to relax before setting out on an acclimatization hike toward Kikilewa Camp (3,630 m) along a short stretch of the Rongai Route. This gentle hike includes a 100-meter gain in altitude, after which you will return to Second Cave Camp for the evening.
After breakfast, you will begin your trek to Kikelewa Camp (3,630 m), where, if the weather is clear, you’ll enjoy impressive views of Kibo Volcano. This is considered a lighter day, so once you arrive and have lunch, you’ll have time to rest and sleep in preparation for the upcoming trek to Mawenzi Tarn Camp. In the evening, after dinner, your guide will check the health and condition of each group member and provide the necessary instructions for the next day’s journey.
Upon reaching Kikelewa Camp, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Kibo Volcano, especially if the skies are clear. After taking in the scenery, it’s the perfect time to rest, recharge, and prepare for the days ahead at higher altitudes.
After another early breakfast, you’ll set off from Kikelewa Camp toward Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located at the base of Mawenzi Volcano, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest peak. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a nourishing lunch and a two-hour rest to recharge before the afternoon activity.
Next, you’ll embark on a short acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Volcano, gaining about 200 m (656 ft) in elevation, before returning to Mawenzi Tarn Camp for a well-deserved dinner.
These acclimatization hikes are gentle but very important. They help your body adjust to higher altitudes, increasing your chances of a successful summit while reducing the risk of altitude sickness. Taking these hikes seriously is a key part of climbing Kilimanjaro safely and comfortably.
Today, you’ll trek from Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut Camp (4,720 m / 15,482 ft). As you ascend, the landscape gradually transforms into a dramatic rocky semi-desert, offering stark and unforgettable scenery.
The hike itself is manageable, but it’s important to maintain a steady pace to conserve energy for the upcoming summit climb. Once you arrive at Kibo Hut Camp, take time to rest, avoid any strenuous activity, and hydrate well. This preparation is crucial, as later that night you’ll begin the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 ft).
Your group will depart at night from Kibo Hut Camp (4,720 m /15,482 f) and head toward Kilimanjaro’s summit: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m /19,336 f). Technically speaking, the trek is not difficult, however, at this high altitude, even regular physical activity can feel strenuous. Therefore, for the final summit climbers are paired in twos and put under the care of a personal guide, who will closely monitor their physical well-being. After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier, if desired. Then you will return to Kibo Camp and after a two-hour rest continue your descent to Horombo Camp (3,720 m /12,202 f).
Don’t forget that 90% of all accidents occur during the descent, including most broken arms and legs. Please pay attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
After a warm breakfast in the morning, you’ll head toward the Kilimanjaro National Park exit at Marangu Gate (1,970 m / 6,462 ft). Upon completing the descent, the whole group will gather to congratulate you, and you’ll have the opportunity to share your thoughts about the climb in the guestbook. Finally, you will receive your commemorative summit certificates and be transferred back to your hotel.
After breakfast on the final morning, you are transferred back toward Arusha and onward to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight. Your 5-day Tanzania Kilimanjaro trek — part of the PK Adventure — concludes, leaving you with memories of varied ecosystems and the wild heart of Tanzania.
